1. Lectures

Task 3 briefing:
In Task 2 we already did some visual analysis. For Task 3 we will create a work of design, based by the idea that we already proposed in Task 2. In the chosen sketch, we are expected to apply our knowledge of design principles so we can develop it and make a final design. We can use any medium or materials, that suitable to convey our final visual message. This blog will contain our progress and how we finalised it.

2. Instruction

For the instruction you can refer to Task 1 instruction section.

3. Selected Idea

In the previous task I made 3 sketches based on my selected artwork, in this task I began to choose my sketches. I found it hard to choose but with some discussion, I chose my first sketch. Below in Figure 3.1 is my selected sketch.

Fig 3.1: Selected sketch.

3.1 Progress Work

After choosing the sketch, I began to improve the sketch by adding some star elements to the background. Below is my improved sketch in Figure 3.1.1, I use pencil and paper to sketch.

Title : Bursting Dream
Rationale : Someone who has mixed feelings because they are scared to have big dreams. They are scared of failing, so they limit themselves and instead of chasing their desires, they choose to surpress it in their heart. It ends up giving a huge burden in their heart so they choose to let it go. The star above represented their true self, a star, where they had a bright future waiting for them.

Composition
In Figure 3.1.2 you can see, for the composition I want to use emphasis in principle of design specifically the emphasize on exception to make the human more contrast. The artwork will be symmetrically balance with movement in it. The elements will be in repetition. After it's getting colored, I hope it will create a good color harmony.

Fig 3.1.2: Composition used.

Positioning
To make the composition work, in Figure 3.1.2 I apply the principle of design which is emphasize on exception. The human have a different shape unlike the other elements, it has a circle shape but the rest have a triangle shape. I place the human in the center to create balance. I place the movement out of the human and outside of the burst I add another movement in to represent shooting star. To remove the negative space, I add elements all around with repetition elements. To convey a better meaning of my art, I will add a heart in the middle but not to overpowering so the human can still be the focal point. Below in Figure 3.1.3 is my reference for the heart.

Color Exploration
In task 2, I already have a moodboard for the color and the background, but after some discussion and consideration, I then decide to change my moodboard.

Fig 3.1.4: Color exploration.

In Figure 3.1.4, I'm doing some color exploration for the background, human and elements color. After the exploration, you can see in Figure 3.1.5, I did some rough sketch with pencil color in paper to test the color combination.

Fig 3.1.5: Color exploration 2.

I want to make the person stand out more so I change it into a more bright color. In Figure 3.1.6, I still use pencil color and I change the person with yellow and orange color, meanwhile the background and the star remain the same but I add the little star elements around with red, orange and blue color.

While I'm exploring the color in digital, I realize that I need to add the heart in the middle to convey the meaning of my art better. The heart should be visible but not to overpowering because the focal point is the human, so I made the heart with white color. I also remove the color red in my elements, so the color harmony will be better. Below in Figure 3.1.7 is my final color palette.

Digitization
For my artwork, I decided to make it digital using Procreate. After I finalize all the composition, position and the color, I began to digitalize my sketch. Below in Figure 3.1.8 is the process video of my artwork.

3.2 Final Design

Rationale
I came up with my final work sketch based on my selected artwork as an inspiration, along the way there are many changes happen for the sketch. I began by searching the composition, position until the color I will use. Through my exploration, I understand more about what color will match the meaning of my art and how I can make the composition better. After all the decision I made, as you can see in Figure 3.2.1 my artwork finally done.

My artwork, Bursting Dream, is an artwork that tells about someone who has mixed feelings because they are scared to have big dreams. The reason they are scared because they are afraid of failing, so they limit themselves and instead of chasing their desires, they choose to surpress it in their heart. It ends up giving a  huge burden in their heart so they choose to let it go. The star above represented their true self, a star, where they had a bright future waiting for them. I hope my artwork can relate to some people out there.

The design principle that I found in my artwork are emphasis specifically emphasize on exception, contrast, balance, movement, repetition, harmony and unity.

Fig 3.2.2: Design Principle analysis.

In Figure 3.2.2, I used a different shape for emphasis. Most of the elements are somehow triangle except for the person. For the color, I made it yellow to show contrast. The star elements create a sense of  movement resembling shooting stars and are arrange in repetition. The colors outside the contrast create harmony and give a sense unity.

4. Feedback

Week 6
General Feedback : My overall work is on track and Ms. Wong told me to keep it up.
Specific Feedback : I need to adjust my final sketch so the meaning can be properly delivered.

Week 7
General Feedback : My blog is organized and have a full progress from the beginning, also my final work is good and she told me to keep the good work.
