Visual Analysis
Method of understanding design that focus on the visual elements and
principles or a description and explanation of visual structure for its own
sake. The purpose can be recognize as the choice that a designer made in
creating design, to understand better how the design properties communicate
ideas, content or meaning.
Visual Analysis include three phases :
- Phase 1 : Observation
- Phase 2 : Analysis
Think about the observation and make statement about the visual elements
that already identified to create design principles that complete that work
of design.
- Phase 3 : Interpretation
Fact about the design work, can also be the meaning and purpose of the
design to be created.
Task 2 Briefing :
In the previous task, we already learn about elements and design principles. After choosing artwork in Task 1, in Task 2 we have to analyze the selected artwork and find the design principles, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design.
2. Instruction
For the instruction you can refer to Task 1 instruction section.
3. Visual Analysis
Last week I already chose my favorite artwork to analyzed. This is the detail
of the artwork.
Fig 3.1: Selected Artwork.
Title : Revelling in the chaos of this life
Artist : Jisoupy
Year : 2025
Medium : -
Size : 10.5 x 14.8 cm (A6)
1. Observation
In Figure 3.2 we can see, the artwork is in portrait mode, it shows a human in the center with
spread arm and eyes closed. The human surrounded with many elements such
as fish, seashells, flower, leafs, star, butterfly, mushroom, ladybug,
carrot and additional stroke to fill the negative space, created a visual
of door. The main color are pink, yellow, orange, purple and blue. It is a
colorful art with pastel color.
2. Analysis
The analysis for Figure 3.2 is symmetrically balanced, we can see it that the
elements are mirroring and the human in the center with star in the head
that is also in the center. The focal point of the artwork is the human and that's create an emphasis. There's a repetition of elements that creates unity, it becomes one even though there's a lot of elements. The elements
direction are going to the center that creates a movement.
The color combination creates a good harmony to the artwork.
The gestalt theory inside is proximity, the doodle elements is
nature theme that related to human as the main character. Lastly, the
word and image inside the art work is relevant.
The artwork in Figure 3.2 was made in February 2025, the artist creates this art while
travelling around south east by herself. She met a lot of new people and
having that experience make her reflect on who people are and how people walk
their paths in this life. There has been joy and resilience in her life and
she wanted to interpret that feeling in her month's illustration. She stated
that she would love to draw more about her travel journey to connect with us
through her art.
My interpretation for Figure 3.2 artwork is quite similar to what the artist want to interpret. When I saw the artwork, I feel the elements of life (nature) in there and all of the elements move towards the human, means the human can feel what life is and it is connected to the quotes "oh! to be alive!". Overall, I think her artwork made me think of another point of view in life.

4. Sketch and Rationale
After doing visual analysis, I began to sketch based on the selected
artwork as my main references.
Sketch 1
The first idea is interpreting the artwork, in Figure 3.1, I saw the person close their eyes
like dreaming while enjoying life. I took that idea and think about some
dreamer. I want to make the background feels like in space with shooting star. Below in Figure 5.1 is my moodboard for sketch 1.

Rationale : My sketch in Figure 5.2 explained about how they kept their dream until it burst even though they are
born to be a star, that's why there are stars in the top shining above them and representing their
true self.
Sketch 2
My second idea is the developed idea of sketch 1 in Figure 5.2, still something about a
dreamer with feelings difficulty. In my visual references in Figure 5.3, I can't help to think about Disney movie
called tangled when I sketch the hair and I saw a similar art in
pinterest to add in my references.

Rationale : For my sketch 2 in Figure 5.4, the girl have to pick which star she will be born, the
hand represent the star she will choose. The left side is the difficult part
and the right side is the easy part of choosing which star, it represents her
mixed feelings towards all of this star.
Sketch 3
For the last sketch, the dreamer finally chooses a star and burn the rest. The
scenery will be a sky with a star that she holds. The behind story of my sketch is related with my previous sketches in Figure 5.2 and Figure 5.4. The moodboard for my background with visual references are in Figure 5.5.

Title : Chosen Star
Rationale : For my last sketch in Figure 5.6 explained conflict with her feelings to choose which star or
dream she will choose. She finally make up her mind and choose one star and
burn the rest to represent her definite feeling.
5. Feedback
Week 4
General Feedback : After reviewing my blog, Ms. Wong said my visual analysis, explanation and sketch are good, and told me to keep it up.
Specific Feedback : I need to add colon to each figure 3.2, etc. She also told me to make the image bigger so it can be read.
Week 5
General Feedback : My overall blog is good and I did a well and proper job for the flow of my work
Specific Feedback : I need to fix some of my in text citation and add the link to refer to the previous task.
