Week 1 :
This week we learn that culture and design are inseparable. Visual
culture is a study of visual object. visuals are :
- everything that can be seen, it means including nature but nature is not culture unless there’s meaning and representation.
- everything that created by human and can be seen, produce by human for visual representation that has function, content, and communicative purpose.
“Designers need to be aware of cultural nuances, symbolism and context to
create design that are inclusive and resonate with diverse
audiences”
Design significance
in design there are 3 level of preserving visual (design system):
1. Basic assumptions -> values, principles, practices
Cultural function
purpose
2. Norms and values -> look & feel, design elements, design
function
Design language
aesthetics
3. Artifacts and products -> tools, technology
Implementations
use
Design Sensitivity
“Cultural sensitivity in design goes beyond aesthetics; it also
encompasses functionally usability and the overall user experience”
Addressing cultural sensitivity
- Inclusive design
- User research
- Localisation
- Cultural awareness training
Week 2 :
Everyday design
We can find an everyday design everywhere, for example way finding that
we often see in the road. Design also influence and improve our lifestyle
quality.
"Art in itself is meant to be consumed, said Eddin Khoo, and in spite of
technology will always draw society towards creativity, narratives and
experiences intrinsically human."
“Designers could be more flexible in creating new types of work, and more
experimental in building one's identity in fashion.”
3. Project 1
A proposal to concretise ideas, supported by research, for a final design revolving
a given theme that reflects our understanding and interpretation
of global issues and design aesthetics.
3.1 Research
For this task we were given a task to explore about everyday design.
Everyday design comes in many way, such as simple as the signage in road.
My group discuss a lot of things we can think of when it comes to everyday
design and we decided to choose kitchenware. Kitchenware have a special
and unique design based on what function they have, and we were thinking
if the design have a cultural references in it. After some
discussion, we comes up with 3 topics :
1. Matchawan (Japanese matcha bowl)
2. Masala Dabba (Indian spice holder)
3. Cezve/ibrik ( Turkish copper coffee pot)

After some discussion and consultation, we decided to choose Matchawan
(Japanese matcha bowl) as our topic.

4. Project 2
Conduct a data gathering collection process about the culture with relevance to the theme and our research objectives.
4.1 Data collection
The methods that we use to gather the data are through survey, internet
research and observational. In the survey we mainly ask about how valuable
of the Japanese ceramics in everyday use, can Japanese ceramics replace
other materials for the utilities and how do the Japanese ceramics affected
by the modern trends. To collect more data for better understanding we also
did internet research about Japanese cultural. We search about the term that
Japanese use so we can apply that term into our everyday design. Lastly we
use observational method, where we observe the materials specifically for
bowls.
Below is the data collection PPT :
Document 4.1.1: Data collection PPT.
We hope that through this data collection, we can learn and understand more
about Japanese cultures, especially their application in matcha bowl
designs.

5. Final Project Submissions
After collecting all the necessary data in project 2, we began to work
for the summary of all the project. We present the summary in brief, below
is the presentation deck and video presentation :
Document 5.1: Final presentation deck.
Document 5.2: Final presentation video.
For our final project, we will be making Tiktok videos about our chosen
cultural. The Tiktok video goal is to communicate our chosen cultural
topics to a broader audience, fostering understanding and appreciation of
everyday design. We will record, reflect, and creatively present our
interactions, observations, and insight about everyday design.

containing all of our presentation deck and data:
6. Reflection
Throughout this semester, I gained a new understanding of
intercultural design. We did a lot of research for our project, while doing
that we eventually learn a lot about Japanese culture and how they did they
design or how their culture of tea ceremony looks like. It helped me
recognize the importance of research and cultural sensitivity. I learned to
create designs by understanding different cultures, values, and perspective.
By that, we can represent their culture with the hope of influencing
people's perceptions.
I also realized how intercultural design has changed my perspective on
design in general. Intercultural design is so much more than that, it
explores different cultural elements, design principle, and art style.
However, there were some challenges throughout this module, I found it
difficult to design and apply cultural touch at the same time. Overall, my
experience in this semester was fun, I learned a lot of things and also met
a lot of new friends to work with.
