Process Works

1. COVER

fig 1.1 cover references

With all the references, i began to sketch my cover first.

fig 1.2 sketch

The cover show, the "monkey's paw" u can see blood coming out his hand, because every time they wish about something there would be a sacrifice for that to happen.

I began by tracing an image of hand (my hand) in illustrator, then i use photoshop to adjust the effect and color, and the blood.

fig 1.3 the elements

I use effect and liquify in photoshop to create the hand looks and using brush to add blood

fig 1.4 after adding effect in photoshop

I add this to the illustrator and continue adding some depth effect and many more.

fig 1.5 cover progress 1 and 2

After some consultation with Mr. Hafiz, he said to remove the wrist and make the hand look more old and embalmed.

2. WEBCOMIC

To began with, I read the monkey's paw story and began to search what parts I'm going to use for my comic panel. I also watch some animated story in youtube to understand the story visually.

fig 2.1 animated video for "the monkey's paw"

After I watched the video, I began to search for some references for art, the transition and how the frame ink will be.

fig 2.2 references #1

fig 2.3 references #2

With the parts that i already chose in monkey's paw story, i highlighted the important key to know what should i draw for every panel.

fig 2.5 sketch progress (left : sketch, right : frame ink)

After some consultation, Mr. Hafiz told me to tightening the frame ink because it's still loose and change the first panel frame ink and  I need to add the surrealism touch, so I made the background looks surrealistic

fig 2.6 final sketch

After i finalize my sketch, i began export it to illustrator. I trace my sketch using pen tool and using some references for the person.

fig 2.7 progress digital #1

For panel 2, I use the hand from the cover of monkey's paw and liquify it. After that I made the person using pen tool. For the background, I use pencil tool to get that effect.

fig 2.8 progress digital #2

then i made the last panel first before the third because the person i'm using going to be the same just need some adjustment on the face and hair.

fig 2.10 final webcomic before coloring

After that i began coloring the panel, I chose green and blue color for the panel.

fig 2.11 color pallete

I made the person wearing red to have a contrast with the background color, as she is the main focus.

fig 2.12 final outcome

3. ANIMATE

For the animation, I decided to animate the tears in panel 1, the hand in panel 2 and the lights in panel 3 The hands will become longer and suffocate the person, like trying for help.

There are 7 frame in total for the animation. After i made it in illustrator, i export it to photoshop.

Self Reflection

This task is probably the most difficult one to work on. There are a lot of steps and many detail to work, we have to make the cover, the comic and the animation as well. For me, the most challenging part is the comic, the details are a lot and it's quite difficult to trace my sketch in illustrator. I have to search a lot of references to find color palette that i like. Even though it's really challenging, i manage to finish it and hope for the best for this task.
