3. PROCESS WORK

3.1 Research

I began by searching some reference from pinterest to get some inspiration and to explore more about typography alphabet design.

fig 3.1.1 typography exploration, week 9

After some typography exploration, i tried to combine all the detail of each typography that i like.
I also saw some fonts in google font and Dafont too, to add insight for inspiration.

3.2 Ideation

Letter dissection exercise
We learn to dissect a letter and then use shape builder. I use Serifa std 55 roman letter "H" and dissect it using line.

fig 3.2.1 dissection and using shape builder

Sketching
I used various of marker to try which marker should i use first and began some exploration with the ideas that i got from research.
fig 3.2.2 exploration, week 9

fig 3.2.3 using 3 different marker, week 9

The idea of the first sketch is fairytale, cause brush pen usually used to make calligraphy, I think brush pen is the most suitable pen for it. I tried to make it like a butterfly to get that fairytale looking font.

The second sketch is slightly warp font, so when i'm searching for references, i got a lot of warp looking font, i thought about how to make it different so i make is slight warp but not the entire stroke.

For the rest of the sketch, i came up with it when i'm scribbling.

After some consultation, Mr. Max approve the first brush pen sketch. Then, i proceed to write the rest of the letter for o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! #

Digitalization
First, I made the layout for baseline, x-height and caps height, because i use uppercase letter, my letter will start in the baseline till the caps height (the red box).

fig 3.2.5 digital progress (week 11)

The tool that I use for each letter are Pen tool, Type tool, Width and Shape Builder. All the thick and thin line should be in the same size, so i made one letter first, to guide me for the rest of the letter.

I did some consultation with Mr. Max and he told me to adjust some letter to make it look all the same style. He told me to adjust the O, L, E, S, N, T, I, and #, it's a small adjustment.

After being approved i started to make it all into one shape

4. FEEDBACK

Week 8
independent leaning week, no class.

Week 9
General Feedback : try not to draw the alphabet but write it.
Specific Feedback : for the flexible pen, i need to use the thin and bold line equally, so if there are thin and bold line, all the letters should have it too.

Week 10
Specific Feedback : my lowercase design composition was wrong but the uppercase already correct. the first design uppercase for brush pen got approved, the stroke need adjustment for E C N letter.

Week 11
Specific Feedback : all the thick and thin line on the letter have to be the same size

Week 12
Specific Feedback : Mr. max told me to adjust some letter and after that i can continue to place it in font lab

5. REFLECTIONS

Experience
For this task is quite hard because we have to make our own font. I find it hard to search for the references, because i have a lot of reference but it is hard to actually combine it together to make it different. But after some scribbling for a few days, i manage to made my own font.

Observations
When i began my research for font that i like, i specifically choose many calligraphy font, it caught my eye and brush pen is an easy pen to deal with. But because of many calligraphy reference, i actually find it hard to made the other sketch and i should have do more research. But, I manage to finish my sketch and got approved

Findings
Need a lot more practice and creativity to made more unique font.

6. FURTHER READING

fig 6.1 The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst, week 9

This book tells about the anatomy of type, Typographic scale and proportions, layout and composition, typography in digital era and many more.

fig 6.2 harmony and counterpoint page 45

This page tells us how important using scale in design. Using scale can create balance design, create various of size (ex : 8 pt, 20 pt, 22 pt), and we can use scale to create a simple design and gradually create more unique scale with our style.
