Typography
Task 2 : Typographic Exploration & Communication (Text Formatting and
Expression).
This task requires the combination of skills learned in Exercise 1
& 2. Also, the final outcome is expected to be suitable, impactful, memorable and engaging.

Lecture 1 : Typo_5 Understanding
Letters
The complexity of each individual letterform is neatly
demonstrated by examining the lowercase 'a' of two seemingly
similar sans-serif typefaces—Helvetica and Univers. The
different is the tail of 'a' one is straight and the other is
slightly up.

Letters/Maintaining x-height
Curved stroke like 's' must rise above median in order to appear as
the same size
fig 1.1.2
Letters / Form / Counterform
When letters are joined to form words, the counterform includes the
spaces between them. The latter is particularly and important
concept when working with letterforms like lowercase 'r' that have
no counters per se. How well you handle the counters when you set
type determines how easily we can read what's been set.
fig 1.1.3
One of the most rewarding way to understand the form and counter
of a letter is to examine them in close detail.

Letters / Contrast
The simple contrasts produces numerous variations:
small+organic/large+machined; small+dark/ large light ...

3. Process Work
3.1 Research
I chose the Bauhaus topic, because when i search about Bauhaus, the
design really catches my eyes. I started by searching about Bauhaus. I
searched it on pinterest so i can get the visual about Bauhaus
design.
Bauhaus, or “house of building,” a name derived by inverting the German
word Hausbau, “building of a house.” Gropius’s “house of
building” included the teaching of various crafts, which he saw as
allied to architecture, the matrix of the arts.

3.2 Ideation
Bauhaus design emphasizes geometric shapes and clean lines in buildings
and other designs. So i try to make the "Bauhaus" using shape and
combine it with some of my references.
I made my sketch in adobe illustrator for the 'Bauhaus' word.
fig 3.2.1 the first 4 sketches for Bauhaus, week 6
The first sketch, i try to fill the character to make shapes. The
second one i use shapes to create letter B and A. The third i try to
make a building but i think it was difficult to read, later on Mr.Max
told me to revise it. The last one, i tried to make shapes and
building at the same time.

After I finalize my Bauhaus word, i try to make a layout with the text

I made some adjustment for the layout based on Mr.Max feedback

4. Feedback
Week 6
General Feedback : Combine type expression and text
formatting
Specific Feedback : The overall sketch for Bauhaus
word is good but there's one sketch that is not readable, so Mr.Max told
me to work on that.
Week 7
Specific Feedback : the layout need some adjustment, he said to
align everything.
5. Reflections
Experience
For this task is quite challenging for me, because we have to combine type
expression and text formatting. We have to combine all that we have
already learn in this task. I find it hard to do the layout and i need
more research for it. But overall it amaze me because i learn something
new and learn that we can combine it together and create an amazing
layout.
Observations
I chose the Bauhaus topic, because I've never heard of it before, i began
to search it to understand the definition. I think I struggle making the
headline because my research was not enough, and i should have do more
research. But, I manage to finish my headline and got approved.
Findings
Need a lot more practice and do more research, so the meaning of the
design will be delivered.
6. Further Reading
fig 6.1 A Pocket Guide Combining typefaces by Tim Brown
This books tells us how to combine typefaces, by understanding the
typeface quality, and how good the harmony can be when we combine it. It
is a good book for beginner to create a good design.
fig 6.2 choosing typefaces (page 25)
On this page, we learn how to choose typefaces. First, we need to know what
we are going to design, and what kind of visual hierarchy your content
require. When we actually find the anchor typeface that works for us, we
need to run a background check to make sure it will meet our needs in
practice. After we've chosen and set the first typeface, survey our project’s
outstanding needs and look for typefaces that can serve those needs while
complementing the anchor typeface and bolstering our emotional goals
