2. Process Work

For the final project, we are required to create a visual effects video based on the given theme. This task was completed as a team of two people.

My teammate and I chose tarot card number 2 and received 'What do you want the most?' as our main theme. After receiving the theme, we began creating the proposal, starting with references, the music we used, and the storyboard. The Google Slides presentation is shown below:

In Week 10, the 'cloning' visual effect was tested and edited using Premiere Pro, guided by a tutorial video from the following link: David Manning.

First, three separate shots were filmed from different positions and imported into Premiere Pro. Each clip was placed on a different timeline layer to create the cloning effect, arranged sequentially.

Next, masking was used to isolate the first clone, and the same steps were repeated for the third clone.

After adjusting the positions and masking, I added an adjustment layer for color correction and grading to make the footage more cinematic and smooth.

Here is the final outcome for the testing:

THE FINAL PROJECT

After proposing the story for our final project, we began creating a shooting schedule and preparing the props we would need during filming. Below is the shooting schedule, along with our notes on the “OK” takes and the selected take for each scene.

Shooting process
With all the preparations completed including the character looks, we began shooting. Below is our documentation during the filming process.

Editing process
After we finished shooting, we began exporting all the footage along with the sound effects. We are using Premiere Pro and After effect to edit.

For the first visual effect, I used a basic 3D effect and applied the swivel tool to distort the work. Then, I used the multiply blending mode to create a transparent effect.

For the second visual effect, I used After Effects to create an enveloped drop effect.  I use transform --> position. After that I use the motion blur.

The last visual effect I used is cloning. I used the masking tool along with the path tool to outline each character.

After receiving feedback, we need to make some adjustments, especially by fixing the work's overlay to make it more overwhelming and visually pop.

Color grading
Our story consist of three color grading. The first color grading is neutral pink, which embraces subtle femininity. This choice was inspired by our tarot card and sets a gentle, calm tone at the beginning of the story.

The second color grading is yellow. Since our story revolves around someone who is overwhelmed with work and assignments, we chose yellow to represent a sense of chaos and madness. It visually conveys the emotional pressure experienced by the character.

Fig 2.15: Yellow color grading, Week 13 (16/07/2025).

Lastly, we use purple color grading to express a feeling of illusion. In the story, there are elements of cloning, which is something that unreal and imagined. The purple tone supports this surreal and dreamlike atmosphere.

In our final week’s feedback section, we need to make some adjustments to make our story feel smoother. First we need to change our yellow color grading to black and white. Mr. Martin suggest this to make a good flow for the other color grading. So I keyframe the color grading from pink to black and white. We also add vignette to make it more intense.

Fig 2.17: Black and white color grading, Week 14 (23/07/2025).

I also adjust the warm color on character face, so I desaturated it with basic correction.

Fig 2.18: Desaturate color, Week 14 (23/07/2025).

To keep the contrast color for the works, I make a new sequence for all the works and put it at the top of the color grading adjustment layer.

3. Feedback

Week 11:
We need to clarify the storyboard and add necessary scenes to better explain the purpose of our story.

Week 13:
The overlay needs to be adjusted to make it stand out more and convey a messy, overwhelming feeling for the character.

4. Reflection

This project was a truly enjoyable experience, as it allowed me to create a short video using visual effects as one of the key elements. It opened my eyes to the behind-the-scenes process of the filmmaking industry and gave me a deeper appreciation for the teamwork and creativity involved. One of the most valuable parts of this project was learning how to use software like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. I discovered how visual effects can significantly enhance storytelling by adding mood, depth, and imagination to a scene. From color grading to compositing, I was able to experiment with techniques that brought our short film to life. This experience not only improved my technical skills but also sparked my interest in the world of visual effects and film production.
